Description

Sawyer Soft Oar Tethers – Plastic Quick-Release provide a simple, dependable way to secure your oars if they come out of the oarlock. Unlike traditional ring-style tethers, the adjustable soft loop slips over the oar blade and cinches around the shaft, allowing installation without removing the blade. This makes them compatible with one-piece wood oars, Sawyer SquareTop Oars, and most composite oars.

Constructed from heavy-weight polypropylene webbing, each tether features a durable nickel-plated ring for the oarlock end, an adjustable soft loop for the oar, and a plastic quick-release buckle positioned at the center of the tether. The quick-release buckle allows the tether to be quickly disconnected from the boat's rigging when needed, while the soft webbing design helps reduce noise compared to traditional ring-style tether systems.

This version features a lightweight plastic quick-release buckle for fast, convenient connection. Sold in pairs. Fits most wood and composite oars, including Sawyer SquareTop Oars. Inspect before each use and replace any tether showing excessive wear or damage.

Materials & Construction

The Sawyer Soft Oar Tethers are constructed from heavy-weight polypropylene webbing for excellent strength, flexibility, and resistance to water absorption. The soft webbing reduces noise against the boat while remaining comfortable to handle and easy to adjust.

A nickel-plated steel ring provides a durable connection at the oarlock end, while the adjustable soft loop installs over the oar blade before tightening securely around the handle. The plastic quick-release buckle, located at the center of the tether, allows the tether to be quickly disconnected from the boat's rigging without removing it from the oar. Two metal snaps keep excess webbing neatly secured and help prevent tangles.

Simple, Effective, and Inexpensive Peace of Mind

I recently picked up the Sawyer SOFT Oar Tethers, and I couldn’t be happier with them. These are about as straightforward as gear gets, but sometimes simple is exactly what you need—especially when it works this well. Installation took less than a minute, and the design is so intuitive that no instructions are necessary. I'm especially grateful for these while my 11-year-old son is learning to row. Knowing there’s a layer of protection against losing an oar gives both of us peace of mind on the water. The cam buckles are a great touch—offering a quick release when needed without having to remove the tethers from the oars or the boat. They're also much stronger and more robust than the plastic buckles shown in the photos, which was a pleasant surprise. For the price, these tethers are a no-brainer.
